Interior inspiration
Having come up with my ideal check list of things I’m looking for in a VW Camper, number (7) on the list was it having a camping interior, preferably a fairly original, vintage one rather than a modern on. Don’t get me wrong, I like modern things, but initially I’m looking for a more period, stock/original type of camper, rather than an a modern custom interior.
There were a range of classic interior conversion companies that specialised in making camper interiors. Some of them are still in business today doing modern camper conversions!
The German Westfalia interior
Some of the classic vintage camping interiors that were specified for the VW camper included various models or versions such as the classic German Westfalia interior, like the classic SO42 interior with its small pop up roof.

As well as other coach builders, including Dormobile, ASI/Riviera, Holdsworth, Danbury Motorcaravans, Devon and Canterbury Pitt. In America there were other companies making interiors such as the Sun-Dial.

With the advent of the VW Split screen camper, a supporting range of different coach building companies took on the challenge of providing different specialist camping interiors to provide a range of different choices and options in terms of layout and specifications.
Something for everyone
Unfortunately, finding some of these original camping interior conversions is becoming a difficult task, as over the years, many have been removed, altered or updated to more modern interiors, but my search continues, and in the meantime, I’m just ‘Waitin’ For The Bus’ – (ZZ Top from ‘Tres Hombres’ 1973)
