The sound of silence

Competition time

The guys over at Combe Valley Campers were recently running a monthly photo competition. Winners getting selected by the number of likes on their Facebook page. I thought I’d enter the picture from my recent road trip where I met and made new bus buddies on the beach. This was a photo from that fun road trip that I entered. Happy memories.

Photo fun

I was lucky enough to be selected as the month of October winner 🙂 As such, Combe Valley Campers will use the image on their website, it will also be featured in their 2021 calendar, plus I get a prize posted out… Can you tell what it is yet?

More sound deadening

A box of Dodo Mat, yeah some more sound deadening. Now regular followers of the vdubxs site might remember that a few years ago when I first got the bus, I went to (some might say) extreme measures to ensure the bus was well insulated in terms of both sound and thermal insulation (different requirements/solutions required).

In terms of adding sound insulation, I made sure the main large areas like the roof, side panels and doors were done. Extra attention over the rear engine bay where any noise would be at its loudest.

Prize plan

However, I have a cunning plan! The Dodo Dead Mat Hex sheet is purposely designed to be help installation in and around complex shapes/areas, as it moulds easily on more complex surfaces. When I first fitted the sound insulation, I did the large, most important areas. I left the cab and cargo floor areas for later, as both already had the thick original VW rubber mats on them with their extremely sturdy waffle construction. So this should help finish off those areas (or at least do most of it). A top tip for fitting sound deadening is to do it on a warm summers day. The sun makes the materials much more pliable and easier to fit. Although on the first inspection, the Dodo Dead Mat Hex sheet looks pretty flexible… still, roll on spring/summer anyway! 🙂

Dodo Dead Mat Hex

This sound deadening has a high-grade butyl compound for better sound deadening and vibration control. To maintain flexibility and ease of cutting, the material has a unique Hex embossing pattern. The sheets are a bit thinner than those I used previously. Ideal if you want a lower weight solution for a quiet smoother drive without adding unnecessary mass. Apparently, the unique Dodo specification chemistry of the synthetic butyl core effectively deadens panel vibration without the excessive bulk of competitor products.

The distinctive Hex top sheet is purposely designed to be aid installation and moulds easily on more complex surfaces. This added flexibility allows the Dodo mat to be easily installed, with improved cosmetic appearance whilst minimising creases and folds.

Winter sun

Thinking of the summer, you still get glorious winter sun to get out and about in for your shopping in these Covid-19 pandemic times! It’s good to get out once in a while and clear your head. Nothing does that better for me than to take the bus out for a drive!
