if at first you don’t succeed…

Interior design updates

When making my first template, I had overlooked the rear roof support an not allowed for the thickness of the plywood itself. Having now taken the missing additional dimensions, it was time to move on and apply the lessons learnt to the v1 plywood template. Having marked up the new layout dimensions, time to adapt the plywood template for a trial fitting.

Template adjustments

Once I had set out and drawn the new dimensions on to the template, it was time to cut it to size with my faithful old Bosch GST 85 PBE jigsaw. The template was cut to the new profile for the rear corners of the bus to go around the tailgate hinge mechanism. Next I thought I’d take advantage of the nice weather, and make a plywood full size template for the front fascia of my Westfalia inspired rear overhead ‘head banger’ locker.

Design drawings

Along with my various cardboard templates, I had also created some scale digital construction drawings for project ‘overhead locker’ 🙂 This allows me to easily update any dimensional changes I make to refine the final design. Must be my old Architectural training coming through! I had created some full size scale construction drawings of the bus roof/gutter profile, then printed this out on to paper so I could trace around it onto plywood. Now time to cut this new template out and see how close it was to the reality of my bus…

I was pretty happy with the fit of the roof profile of the front fascia. However, being a bit of a perfectionist, I reckoned with a couple more subtle tweaks on this and the hinge cut out profile of the shelf, the fit would be ace! 🙂 It’s nice now that the evenings are getting longer and you can work a bit longer outside, it’s almost like summer is on the way! 🙂

The storage unit is getting there

So time to head back from today’s beachfront work location… all in all, it had been a pretty productive day, and looks like the templates are just about there! Still a few more things to think about in terms of how I resolve a few issues, but at least things are progressing nicely so far…
