Well after a good day out in the sun at the Volksworld show yesterday, it’s given me increased motivation to get my Early Bay Westafalia Camper done as soon as possible!
As you would expect from a USA imported Bay, the lower regions of the bus are pretty good an solid all round (unlike a lot of typical UK buses where normally the lower 6″-12″ suffers badly from rust!), however there were a couple of areas that needed some remedial work to make make a good again.
One area that had suffered a bit from rust perforation was the outer rear arch behind the sliding door.
In this instance it made more sense to remove the perforated/rusted section and use a replacement panel to effect the repair. It makes you realise how lucky we are these days that there are an abundance of VW parts suppliers here in the UK, so most parts are still readily available!
So first up the section is cut back to solid OG metal…
Any inner areas that are damaged or affected are also removed…
The inner area sections are then thoroughly cleaned up and treated with red oxide primer to stop any rust coming back any time soon.
Then new repair section metal is welded back into place and given an initial protective coating of red oxide primer
and then the external repair section is finally welded into place and the welds ground flush prior to final finishing work later on.
Nice to see another section of the bus returned to a good solid state again!
