A new look for a new year
I hope everyone had a great break over Christmas and New Year? Did you like the free vdubxs calendar that was made available to download? Is it up on your wall yet? You know the rules, pics or it didn’t happen! Decorations down, calendar up, that was the plan!
Some of you eagled eyed viewers might have noticed a few changes on the vdubxs website. I had previously created a new vdubxs logo a while ago now. Next up was a whole new custom website design. It turned out to be a fairly massive task and undertaking. Different sections. Updated content. Different features. Yes, I’ve had a busy time of late with all the changes and tweaks involved! Hopefully, it’s all worth it for better user experience on desktop, tablet and mobile devices. Let me know what you think, always good to get some feedback…
Early bay days
Gone, but not forgotten. The journey was hidden before, but now it’s not. It was the bus that triggered the early formative days of this website. I was aiming to record the progress of a getting an Early Bay Westfalia SO67 camper back on the road again. How hard could that be, shouldn’t take too long right?
However, as often is the case with some projects, they are not always what you imagine. Soon things got worse, real quick! This turned out to be quite a lengthy renovation, in the end. Was it worth it, or was it too much hassle? Have a look here to find out…
Ah, seems strange looking back at early days of the site. Things have moved on a quite a bit!
Finding things easier
Doing the redesign, I soon realised I had created a fair amount of content over the years. It was nearly 500 posts and 2,700+ images! This, in fact, is post number 501 would you believe.
The quote Bill Gates famously popularised, ‘content is king’ and all that is no use if you can’t find what you’re looking for. So hopefully with new header and footer menu navigation and categories, things should be much easier.
Favourite shows highlighted
Some VW shows are too cool to miss. Some happen every year, others only every fourth year. Then there are those special events that come up once in a while. All of these things have now found their own home under the new Shows/events menu.
Firm favourites like Ben Pon, Brighton Breeze, Hessisch Oldendorf and Ninove are all there with their own dedicated sections. Special events don’t get lost in all the content either. They have their own section too!
Hopefully, this should make finding and sharing content much easier.
Good companies to deal with
I have always liked to have someone personally recommend a good company for me. We are lucky to have a whole range of different suppliers to help keep our classics on the road. Over the years I’ve compiled a list of some recommended VW Aircooled companies or other related services that I thought some might find helpful… anything Aircooled VW, accessories, services, products, road trips, travelling, adventures, camping etc. Let me know if you can think of others you would add to the list?
Not all products are equal…
Things don’t just stop here. There’s a whole new recommended product section that I’m still compiling. Not all products are the same. Some are just way better than others! Tried and tested, these are products I use every day on my road trips in the UK and Europe.
Things that have stood the test of time and I can fully recommend. This section might be helpful to people looking to choose particular items and want to find out what they’re really like. Bookmark this page as I will be adding various items to this moving forward…
Reach more for less
Why have any advertising on the site? The reason for doing this is simple. I decided to move away from having the random and often irrelevant google generated ads. Yuk! Advertising should be relevant and useful. Any advertising on the vdubxs site from now on will be just that. Plus all advertisers will be directly supporting the site and helping contribute to its running and development costs.
Visitors that come to vdubxs are those that are already likely to be highly interested in all things related to Aircooled VW’s, accessories, services, products, road trips, travelling, adventures, camping etc. So if you’re interested in advertising your related services or business here, get in contact.
At only £5 a month (currently) I have deliberately tried to make it really, really affordable to have 12 months of advertising here. This is to build long term, sustainable advertising to help businesses grow whilst helping fund the site and more road trips to create more content! Hopefully, it becomes a win-win situation!
More road trips?
So plans for 2020? A few bits to tidy and finish off on the site, but I would love to go back to the Highlands and Islands of Scotland again. I also have some unfinished business with parts of southern Europe as well. Decisions decisions… watch this space!
