Vintage VW fashion magazine ‘lifestyle’ photo shoot in Whitstable

An exciting opportunity came up last weekend for the VW Early Bay westfalia camper to be used as a backdrop for a fashion magazine photo shoot in the seaside town of my childhood, Whitstable, Kent. The location and choice of an iconic vintage VW camper were a perfect combination for various takes on ‘lifestyle’ imagery for the shoot, so I was really looking forward to the day!

Having got the camper washed and polished ready for the occasion, the weather forecast was not looking too brilliant for the weekend, but at least when I headed off, it was in the sunshine and it was a beautiful drive through the scenic countryside of East Sussex and Kent to get to the final destination.

The shoot was being done by fashion photographer Lonny Spence who brought a model and a small crew of stylists along in a much more modern VW van! Having set off in the sunshine, on arrival in Whitstable we were greeted by some dark storm clouds and intermittent downpours! That said, the stunning storm clouds make a striking contrast against the L87 Pearl White of the Early Bay Westfalia camper!

However, Lonny and his team were nothing if not determined, and despite the less than summer temperature, worked hard in the breaks between the sometimes less than perfect weather, on a series of evocative lifestyle shots that used the iconic nature of the Early Bay Westfalia camper as a backdrop.

The sun eventually breaks on through!

Eventually, the sun decided to break on through, which gave a bit more blue sky to some of the lifestyle shots that were taken both inside and outside of the camper, although as the shoots will be ending up as black and white images, it should not matter too much.

The above shots are simply a couple of my ‘snaps’ from the day in between shots, but once Lonny has gone through all of the images he shot on the day, I will hopefully be able to post some of them up here for you to all see…
