Looking for vintage VW Split screen patina perfection?

I do have a penchant for patina, so my natural inclination when looking for a ‘new’ vintage Volkswagen camper, is to look for a nice original paint VW Split screen bus.

Some of the earlier buses I have owned (often too briefly!) include this amazing 1967 13 Window deluxe still wearing its original White (Blauweis) over Velvet Green paint…

…or how about this lowered 1962 Original Paint Crew Cab?

Both of the above were beautiful buses with lots of character, but the only problem potentially posed with such amazing looking patina buses, is that they can be prone to problems, especially rust!

However, there are some amazing examples of original paint, split screen buses where all of these potential issues have been resolved, but such buses command a very high price if you want to buy one that is already ‘finished’. At the other end of the spectrum, you can still buy good patina projects, but the key word there is project, for if you want the ‘look’, but on a shoestring budget, you will ultimately end up paying a high price (and then some!) for it it when it is finally completed and on the road.

Having spent some time with various ‘project’ buses over the years, I know from first hand experience (see the recent example of the Early Bay Westfalia renovation!) that;

  1. A project can end up costing you way more than you bargained for
  2. Working on a vintage VW invariably takes a lot longer than you planned
  3. There will always be hidden surprises along the way
  4. You will regularly ask yourself why you started doing this project in the first place
  5. Seeing other buses out on the road will frustrate you
  6. A project can end up costing you way more than you bargained for
  7. A project can end up costing you way more than you bargained for!!!

Now credit due where credit is due, but I really do have an absolutely amazing wife and wonderful children, all of whom have been extremely patient with me and my vintage VW ‘habit’, which to be honest, none of them really get, but they do for the most part, humour my obsession. However, another ‘project’ would the one VW too far!

So if I’m to be getting another VW Split screen bus, the descriptive term ‘project’ can not even be vaguely considered as an option! This time I will need to be looking for a pretty complete, original and fairly unmolested bus, with all the hard, time-consuming and expensive work, already done!
